ZIP Codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS), They are a system of postal codes. The term ZIP was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently when senders use the code in the postal address. In 1983, the U.S. Postal Service introduced an expanded ZIP Code system that it called ZIP+4, the system includes the five digits of the ZIP Code, a hyphen, and four additional digits to identify a geographic segment.
